Akron candidates

Akron athletic director Larry Williams has gone dark as the search for the Zips next men’s basketball coach heads into its second week. The decision could be getting close, but no information has been released yet.

Left to the fodder of the internet, some names have emerged as possible candidates that vary in age and college experience.

None, however, come from the Keith Dambrot tree as it’s understood the break between the former coach and his alma mater was anything but harmonious. Dambrot left last month to become head coach at Duquesne.

Among the names being mentioned as Akron candidates in various internet reports are: former Akron player Jon Loyer, 53, an assistant coach with the Detroit Pistons; Anthony Stewart, 46, head coach at Tennessee-Martin; Russell Turner, 46, head coach at Cal-Irvine; and Jamion Christian, 34, head coach at Mount St. Mary’s.
