The UMass men’s basketball coaching search has reached a conclusion – again.
UMass announced the hiring of Chattanooga head coach Matt McCall Wednesday morning, filling the vacancy left after Derek Kellogg was fired three weeks ago. UMass appeared to have a coach in place last week when it announced the hiring of Winthrop coach Pat Kelsey, but Kelsey suddenly reversed course and backed out of the job last Thursday, shortly before an introductory press conference.
UMass now turns to McCall, 35, who coached Chattanooga to a 48-18 record in two seasons as the team’s head coach.
McCall’s name first surfaced in connection to the UMass job Tuesday night after the Daily Hampshire Gazette reported Boston Celtics assistant Micah Shrewsberry, who was linked to the job in various capacities over the past two weeks, was no longer a candidate.
