Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl said Friday the expectation for the program is to make 2018 NCAA Tournament but his job isn’t jeopardy if he doesn’t.
With Pearl announcing Friday that the Tigers (18-14) would not be participating in any postseason tournament except the National Invitational Tournament, and that bid isn’t likely coming, this will mark his third straight year without a postseason berth.
At the end of a 25-minute media conference, Pearl made it more than clear that he does not at all believe his job security will not be affected by missing the NCAA Tournament for a fourth consecutive season if he fails to qualify next season.
“If you want to put my ass on a hot seat, I’m not going there. Cause it’s not,” Pearl said. “There’s difference between being accountable and being in the situation when you evaluate a program. I’d place my basketball program right now and I won’t specify any particular league. We are in the upper division of any Power 5 Conference program with where we are as a program right now. That’s how coaches should be judged.”
