When I was at Pepperdine in the early 2000’s I like to call it the “Gonzaga effect.” The Zags built a new arena, hired from within and just kept winning. This led to many WCC schools(and others) to do the same. If you could do it in Spokane, you could do it anywhere. It became ok to stay at a mid-major. Add St. Mary’s to that mix and you have WCC coaches struggling to survive. Ray Ratto touched on this and it could not be more true. The parity in the WCC is diminishing and their is no end in sight. Schools in the league want to catch up but it begs the question, will they be able to?
